Friend Hugh,
My reason for not replying to the "Private" part of your favor of the 9th inst. before this was that I wished to make my own observations & fully satisfy myself with the regard to the probability of bringing about an union between the parties mentioned in my last. In a word then, I have come to the conclusion that the heart & affection of the fair one are entirely free & disengaged so far as other suitors are concerned, & that although [spelled altho] I cannot promise our friend Robert all the success I could wish, yet I sincerely believe he stands most favorably in the estimation of the young lady. Now if he thinks and feels as he has done on this subject, I say let him come on as soon as he reaches your city. He will be sure of a warm reception from my wife & Mrs. Lee & I don't think he may look for a frown from any other quarter, no matter what the result of his visit may be. A happy New Year to you all.

Yours truly
David Kyle, Jr.

Let me hear from you.
