Care of Mr. David Kyle Jr.

Richmond Dec. 14 1840

To my dear niece
While you were with Anne [?], we all felt as if you were both expected back every day. But Anne & the doct have returned without you - they left here last Wednesday & now it is we all miss you. William said Sister Ann where is cousin Virginia. Virginia Hurry says Father and Brother after cousin Virginia. Cornelia said Father, go to Norfolk & bring Cousin Virginia back & take us with you. James said, Father, I can go down tomorrow & bring her up. Your Aunt Ann said that "Spiced ______" must not be touched until Virginia returns.

We got a letter from your cousin Margaret Ann two days since & she said "your must bring cousin Virginia down with you to spend the Christmas with us, that Walker [?] will kill his hogs tomorrow and we shall have plenty of spare ribs."

Besides all this your mother wrote your grandmother, that we might have you & I at once accepted the offer. I am particularly anxious to see you, to tell you something that is too good to entrust to a letter. Write us soon and say which of the above propositions you will accept & when it may be carried [spelled carryed] into execution. You have

[Pg. Break] your choice & we all stand pledged to conform to your choice.

The legislature is in session you know and you are a delegate to represent the old north state. And if you cannot do without, bring all of your Satellites [spelled Satelites] with you What do I say? Philosopher as I profess to be, "bring all of your Satellites [spelled Satelites] with you." I ought to have recollected that the Satellites unavoidably revolve around & escort its Primacy.
"Let the same sun with all different rays"
"Blush in the rose & in the diamond blaze".

Well old Jiss[?] it is now elected & the long agony is over - I am now as cool as the center seed of a cucumber. I have returned to my social relations, have forgotten the differences of opinion that had alienated me from my old friends and [?]______, and my right hand obeying the impulse of my heart is extended to every political adversary.

Every thing is now calmed, and bright & happy in prospect, waiting only the realization of our hopes.
"Tis distance, leads enchantment to the view"
"And robes the mountains in its azure blue"

The rain bow is seen in the distance with one foot resting on the Atlantic, the other on the great Pacific, assuring us that the storm is past, and promising us bright & brightening skies for ages to come. I shall now expect as long answer to this letter and that very soon, giving us all the news.

[Pg. Break] Present my best regard to your Uncle & Aunt.
Your affectionate uncle,
James Winston
