Bank of the State of Missouri

St. Louis Jany 28th 1841
Mr. Robert Campbell
Dear Sir
Since your departure nothing of importance has transpired, except a resolution by the Bank requiring curtailment of loans as follows - $5000 - and upward 20 per cent - under $5000 and over $3000 - 15 per cent and under $3000 10 per cent - 4 months

We have been trying to make arrangements with the Insurance officers unofficially to repudiate Dubuque and Mineral Point Bank Notes from circulation, but so far we are successful. I am well convinced we will have a resumption in the west and south and what we are to do, I cannot say nothing presents to my mind but continued liquidation.

We have the navigation open. Boats are now running to New Orleans. My brothers left three weeks ago for the East. If you can throw any business into our hands thro' your friends I shall be greatly obliged - I wrote to your brother's firm a few days ago - I expect tomorrow or the next day to depart for New Orleans - there is no local news - present my respects to your brother.

Your friend
John Smith
