Norfolk, 11th January 1841
Friend Hugh,
By yesterday's boat I received your favor [spelled favour] of the 4th inst. and can only add a few words to my last letter on a certain subject, as the mail closes in half an hour & there may not be another boat for a week. Tell my friend Robt to come on. "the coast is clear" & I feel he stands A.h T [?] in the recollection of the young lady. Her mother wishes it. I know she likes him & he must be a duller boy than I take him for if he dont [sic] make her love him before he is in Norfolk a week. This is my own opinion & I fancy I am not really mistaken. I wish he would come down from Baltimore, (if he comes that way) before going to your city. He has more warm & sincere friends here than he is aware of & some mean people in other places that he shall know hereafter.
